How Blogging Helped Me Grow My Parent-Focused Business – And How It Can Help You Too
Hi, I’m Carla. Welcome to my Bump to Business blog! Here, I help parent-focused business owners like you reach more parents, increase visibility, become the go-to expert, and boost your income. As a mum and business owner, I know how tough it can be to juggle family life and work. Honestly, sometimes it feels like work is easier than keeping the kids entertained—especially during the school holidays! The relentless “I’m bored.” echoing through the home means crying into wine is actually my favourite thing to do at the moment. Anyhow, not long left until normality resumes now.
Today, I want to explore a question I often get asked: How can blogging help grow your business? Before you create a blog, it’s important to consider what you actually want from it. Blogs can serve different purposes, and being clear about your goals will guide your strategy and content creation.
How Blogging Transformed My Business
Blogging has been a game-changer for me. Some business owners use blogs to attract new clients, grow social media followings, or build email lists, but for me, it’s been about generating passive income. And let me tell you, this has been life-changing.
But what exactly is passive income? It’s when you create something once and continue to earn money from it long after it’s been made. For example, my parenting blogs generate revenue through ads and affiliate links, and thanks to search engines, over 317,000 parents visit my site every month! The best part? It works largely on autopilot.
Setting Your Blogging Goals
When you’re starting out, you need to be crystal clear on what you want from your blog. For instance, do you want to:
- Attract more clients?
- Grow your social media following.
- Build an email list?
- Monetise your blog for passive income.
For example, if you’re a sleep consultant, your goal might be to fill your calendar with one-on-one clients. But your blog can also evolve as your business grows. The key is knowing what you want so that you can focus your efforts effectively.
Know Your Ideal Client
One of the most important steps in creating a successful blog is understanding who you’re writing for. Who is your ideal client? And what stage of their parenting journey are they in?
Let’s say you specialise in helping parents with 12-month-old babies dealing with sleep regression. Understanding their struggles—whether it’s exhaustion, anxiety, or balancing work and family—will help you create content that resonates with them. I find it so much easier to write when I have a specific person in mind, and my ideal client is called “Sarah.” When I write, I’m speaking directly to her, and that helps my content connect with the right people.
Creating Content Clusters to Establish Authority
Another great strategy is creating “content clusters.” This means writing a series of blog posts around one specific topic, like sleep regression in toddlers. Instead of jumping from one topic to another, focusing on one area helps Google see you as an expert in that field. It also helps your readers, who may be dealing with multiple aspects of a single problem, find all the information they need in one place.
For example, if your blog is about sleep regression, you could write several posts on different factors causing sleep issues at the 12-month mark and link them together. This not only improves your SEO but also gives your readers more value.
Clear Calls to Action – Make It Easy for Clients
If your goal is to book more clients, make sure every blog post includes a clear call to action (CTA). Whether it’s a link to book a consultation, sign up for your email list, or buy a product, your CTA should guide readers to take the next step.
But don’t overload them with too many options! If you’re focused on getting more clients, don’t ask them to follow you on all your social media channels. Keep it simple. For example, if your main goal is to get one-on-one clients, your CTA should focus on booking a session. Make it easy for them to take action.
Monetising Your Blog for Passive Income
If you’re like me, passive income might be one of your goals. The good news is that there are several ways to monetize your blog:
- Ads: Displaying ads on your blog can generate income as traffic grows. You can control how many ads are shown to avoid overwhelming your readers.
- Affiliate Marketing: Share products or services you recommend, like baby sleep aids or parenting books. When your readers purchase through your affiliate links, you earn a commission.
- Product Sales: If you offer eBooks, courses, or other digital products, your blog is a perfect platform to promote them.
I have several income streams through my blog—ads, affiliate links, on-demand content, newsletters, and more. Having multiple income streams helps ensure that I earn even when I’m not actively working, which has been a lifesaver, especially during the busy summer months!
Long-Term Blogging Strategy
Blogging isn’t a quick fix; it’s a long-term strategy that pays off over time. When I started, I focused on publishing one blog a month, which is manageable even with a busy schedule. As my blog grew, so did my opportunities to generate income. Now, I have a steady income stream from ads, affiliate links, courses, memberships, and more.
It’s important to remember that building a successful blog takes time. However, the sooner you start, the sooner you’ll see the benefits!
Stay Focused on Your Goals
To get the most out of your blog, stay focused on your goals. Whether you’re trying to get more clients, build a community, or generate passive income, your content should always align with those objectives. Make sure every blog post serves a purpose—whether that’s booking clients, growing your email list, or driving sales.
